Blog Photo Fail

I tried to get a picture last night (for my blog) – of course – and it didn’t quite go the way I planned.

But let me start from the beginning, I have this bad habit of leaving a glass on the counter and using that to drink out of – a day or two at least. I fill it up from the fridge water and gulp away. I usually drink a full glass every morning. It makes me feel awake (ish) – until the coffee finishes brewing that is.

Sunday morning, I am wetting my whistle and downing the glass of water like I’m chugging beer (I love water). Chug, chug, chug. I notice – a speck – at the bottom of my glass. So, I stop drinking and peer inside. There, in the glass doing the deads man float, a bug. A teeny, slimy, germy looking bug. Ahhh!!!

I poured the water out, threw the glass in the dishwasher and vowed – NEVER – to drink from a glass I left out on the counter again. How many bugs had I ingested in my water chugging delight? My stomach turned just a little bit. But I put it behind me and now my glass stays in the cabinet; clean and germ free.

It was a moment or two after that I thought……..I should have taken that bug’s picture and blogged about it! Surely others would laugh and cry over my close encounters of the bug kind. Surely, they could relate and share their own near bug ingestion mishaps. But, I didn’t and buggy had went down the drain (the disposal drain).

Enter chance #2, which I was NOT going to miss. Sydney comes walking up to me in the living room holding a glass of water. This was last night. I had seen the water glass on the table when I was cleaning the kitchen, but just left it alone. I figured it was hers and she was drinking from it, and all that was true.

Sydney jams the glass in front of my nose, “Mom, what if I had drank from this without looking?”

My mind flashed back to my drinking without looking moment *shudder* and well, her bug was harder to miss, and a lot bigger. It had LEGS. They were thrashing. “Ewwww!” We chimed in unison – a call to action. We took the captured pest into the kitchen light to look at it and make – that’s digusting – sounds. Imagining if she had drank the water with him in it and what it would have looked like when she tilted the glass up to her face.

That’s when I got the brilliant idea to capture the shot – the moment. “Yeah! Let’s get a picture of it!”

Syd,”Why? Are you going to blog about it?”

Heh.

I grab my camera, all the while bugster is in a Michael Phelps free stroke Olympic event. As fast as his legs were going, he might hit the world record. I pick up the glass holding the camera down. I wanted to get him in the moment he would have been seen as Syd was drinking water. It’s all about renactment ya know?

So, I tilt the glass up towards the camera, towards the horizontal position, the drinking position. The water moves up, and so does the bug. Then he gains traction on the slant racing out of the glass, right towards me, and right towards the camera lens. “Ahhhh!” We shriek in unison as I drop the glass and he reaches the rim climbing down to the table.

More panic and screams as I smoosh the bug. I didn’t get my blog photo moment. I have no picture for you.

I think the lesson here is Jason needs an exterminator do not to leave water glasses on the counter when the temps have been over 100 every day and look before you drink.

By the way, the glass is still on the table.

Drink anyone?

  1. Thanks for the warning! I would have been so panic also. I already hate it when you bike, and a little fly or so flies into your throat. But drinking it….brrrrrrrrrrrrr….Good you two caught it in time! I do have that habit too, to leave a glass on the counter. That is how I drink enough water. But I wash in with the dinner dish every evening šŸ™‚

I have a glass of water that I place by my beside every night. I had the same thing happen to me. I now cover my glass with a glass lid! you can get these lids from any asian stores that sell chinese mugs with lids. Now I have no worries….

  4. First of all, I think that is a great habit. There really is no need to wash a glass everytime you use it. So you were doing the world a service. Just cover it. If you are like me I have a ton of plastic lids from containers of stuff and I can usually find one that fits the glass perfect.

I have a “EEEWWWW” water story as told to me by my hubby. He was awaken one night by a very weird noise that, in his sleep, he couldn’t quite place. When he opened his eyes his face was an inch away from a little furry body who was standing on his pillow stretching over the bed railing with her head in his water glass slurping away. My hubby was so annoyed and grossed out wondering how many times the cat had helped herself to his water. For a long time he keep bottles of water by the bed. Then one day he asked me for a glass of water and I said, “Do you want me to cover it?” And for a second he just looked at me, then it dawned on him and he said, “Oh yeah, that’s why I stopped drinking out of a glass.”

And I agree with Sherri, although picture would have been nice you did a great job picturing it for us!

  6. Eeeeeeeee! Remember that one time (at band camp) (okay maybe not) that I was eating trail mix… threw the last handful down the hatch that is my mouth and then looked down to see SEVERAL small bugs crawling around in the crumbs?? Uh, yeah, I just about puked my guts up.

The lesson is, you’ve GOT TO KEEP AN EYE on what you’re stuffing down your throat hole. Period. Or else you could be downing some extra protein.

  7. I think you need my friend Mr Terminix around – although I have to say that this past couple of weeks appear to yet again be spider season and every day I am finding new ones all around the house. Mirabelle has stopped drawing Mommy and is now drawing spiders all the time instead šŸ™‚

Laughing at Terr’s comment…my dog will drink anything if the glass is left low enough for her to reach..everything must be table height! Geesh, I so hate missing a photo op!

  9. Oh ewwwww!! I could totally picture it… and it gives me the shivers! I hate bugs. We’re dealing with mosquitoes right now and I must say I am always a little more than happy when I see them dead.

  10. Oh eww. yuck. gross. This sure could have been a story from Georgia. Yep. creepy crawlies coming out from everywhere to escape the heat.
Enough of that. I can almost imagine that they’re crawing around me. I hate bugs….with legs.
    You crack me up.
    Yep, you do.

  11. Oi! Thanks for the warning. I suppose I won’t let my glass stand on the counter any more. So good you both saw the bugs in time šŸ˜‰
But on the other hand. There are some countries where bugs are considered a delicacy…

    Happy Wednesday

  12. I ate a chocolate covered bug of some sort in Mexico–but, I guess it’s not the same thing. šŸ™‚

This reminds me of a time when I was still married. We’d been watching a movie and I got up to get a drink of water in the dark. I didn’t drink it all, but left the glass on the counter. Later, when I was clearing up (with the lights on) I saw that the remaining water was dark brown. Still don’t know what came out of the taps that night.

You’ll have to keep us posted if you get another one. šŸ™‚

  13. I swear, true story, last night I set my water glass upside down on a drying mat next to Jason’s glass. Next morning, a squirmy bug under mine. The glass was face down on a mat! WTH?? Lol.
