On a Dark and Starry Night

On a dark and starry night…

The night of the black supermoon (which we can’t see from here).

On this black night, we trekked to the country to see the stars.

I wish I could say we camped or built a fire, roasted a marshmallow or two. Slept in a tent and had a nice hike the next day. Preferably around a lake where we could watch the birds catch their breakfast.

But no, we just took photos. I took photos. My husband checked my skymap app for planets and maybe hacked a few portals on Ingress. Heh.

We drove an hour. We stayed an hour. We drove an hour home.

This is the life of a city dweller and the lengths we have to go to look at more than one or two stars in the sky.

Was it worth it? Was it ever!

Leaving behind the city glare. Immersing into the deep dark under the brilliant twinkle of lights.

It was pure bliss.

And I learned that letting go of a normal night schedule. Getting out and being free to roam and adventure. To bask in the glory of the heavenly skies…it is wonderous and magical.

It is a glow I missed seeing. A midnight blanket I needed to snuggle under. A tremendously soothing space for my soul.

Night, the beloved. Night, when words fade and things come alive. When the destructive analysis of day is done, and all that is truly important becomes whole and sound again. When man reassembles his fragmentary self and grows with the calm of a tree. ~Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

The Little Things

This week I have been anxious – chew my nails, fidget my feet – kind of anxious. Life changes so fast. The weeks are flying by…

Am I taking it all in? Do I spend too much of my time worrying about – all the things – I might be missing or not getting done?

I want to shout, “SLOW DOWN!”

But I know that wouldn’t help….life is happening….whether I have time for it or not.

So, I take a deep breath. And I notice…..the little things.

“In order to see birds it is necessary to become part of the silence.”
– Robert Lynd

There is no over thinking. No time. Just the quiet rustle of feathers and flights.

I find when I look around in wonder, even the weeds have a fascination for me.

Pretty weeds in the heart of winter, who would have thought?

Thine eyes are springs in whose serene And silent waters heaven is seen. Their lashes are the herbs that look On their young figures in the brook. -William C Bryant

When I stop obsessing over time management and busyness, many things become apparently clear.

The sky, the moon, the colors and designs. So many more miracles in the ebb and flow, if we just stop and listen, and let life happen as it should.

There is no stress in nature. No worries. No clock. No calendar.

It just is….and it’s perfect that way.

Don’t miss the little things. Because you might find…….they are not so little after all.

Project 52 - Week 4 - Bare Minimum

All the things that truly matter beauty, love, creativity, joy, inner peace arise from beyond the mind. -Eckhart Tolle

These photos were taken by a park near my house while hiking with the family. I did use some Photoshop filters for a painted effect on a few. I am experimenting with art. Some of my work will be on display at the Arlington Museum in April. I have been trying to see what I like, and what might be wall-worthy. Any, and all input is greatly appreciated.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Illumination

I am a wee bit behind in posting and reading blogs……at least it feels that way.

I don’t have an excuse. I just get distracted very easily. Sometimes, my attention is here, then it is there. I just go with the flow. It makes my life less chaotic. If I tried to over-analyze it, I’d probably end up with a diagnosis of ADD or bi-polarism.

The truth of it is……I just lack organization and planning skills.

Plus, I’m interested in too many things and can’t fit them all in.

Oh, but I try……and there’s the rub.

What does this have to do with illumination? Well, understanding myself and trying to get where I want to be. It is illuminating.

Accepting myself – flaws and all – gives me a sense of peace.

Resolve was the theme for Project 52 last week.

Fitting for this time of year. My resolve is to be more positive. So, I took a photograph of our wind chime outside.

Happy, sunny, smiley, and all glowey. It’s perfect, no?

But it wasn’t. It wasn’t perfect at all. Something was distinctly off about that representation.

I stared and stared at the image. Trying to pinpoint what didn’t fit. I wanted to be happier, right? But happier didn’t seem to ring true.

I am happier. Even depressed, I am happy. I am very laid-back and easy-going. Oh, there are certain times of the month I get wound up, most especially, if I have just taken a dose of steroids for my gigantic hives. But mostly, I am content.

I love my life. The good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful.

But there are times, when the darkness of my past….when the sting of bad decisions…..and all the wrongs of the world…..threaten to take me down.

Sometimes, I let them.

And it is not a pretty place.

So my resolve, the one that fit the most, and called to my heart…is to always shine, even when the days are dark.

Just like my Christmas Cactus….

This flower is engineered to come alive when the nights get longer. See, it only blooms when it has so many hours of darkness – about 12. That happens to coincide with the time change, and the winter months. When our days get shorter….and darker.

Not only are they gorgeous blooms from a dry old cacti plant, but there is something special about them.

An inner glow. An illumination. Do you see it?

That is what I strive for.

No matter how dark it is…..open despite the darkness and shine from within.

The photo above I submitted for Week Two of Project 52. It was chosen as a top ten artist of the week. You can view the feature on Daphne’s blog: Ellenburgh’s Photography.

Maybe, just maybe….I’m on the right path here.

The world is a looking glass, and gives back to every man the reflection of his own face. Frown at it and it will in turn look sourly upon you; laugh at it and with it, and it is a jolly kind companion.
